Zoe

I would normally never be the girl to hand over a box to a man, accepting that it was too heavy for me. I’d rather break my back than letting a man feel like he was better than me in some way. But a shift was happening inside. I knew if Felix hadn’t come along to help, I could have handled it on my own. But I didn’t want to. He got a thrill out of helping. It made him feel good. And as much as I hated to admit, something felt good about giving into him.

As we walked up the stairs together, I found myself wondering if we could both get what we wanted. For all the years I had spent doing nothing but working hard and pretending like I didn’t need anything for myself, there was finally someone right in front of me that made me want to give in a little. I wanted to be selfish and cave into him. Forget what was right or wrong or what it did to anyone else. I wanted to have something all for myself.

The irony of it was...what Felix wanted more than anything was complete and total submission - The last thing on earth I ever imagined myself giving to anyone. So, why did it bring me so much sinful pleasure to give it to him?

We stopped just outside of Paula’s door. His hands were full and he was waiting for me to open it for him, but I got lost in his eyes for a moment. I stared into him, searching for some hint that he was just as lost and confused as I was. Was what happened between us before just some fluke? A product of bad tempers and adrenaline? Or did he want more just as badly as I did?

“Zoe,” he murmured, struggling with how to continue his sentence. “What happened...you know it can never…”

I took in a sharp breath, bracing myself for the reality I was too stubborn to accept. “What? It can never what?”

I knew what he was going to say, and I knew it was true. Paula may have been his ex-wife, but they were still legally married. She still lived in his house, and I was her assistant and companion. Even if she left, he couldn’t go from his arranged marriage to a beautiful woman from an affluent family to a relationship with one of the house staff.

“It can never happen again,” he stated finally.

Even though I knew it, my heart sank straight to the bottom of my stomach like a boulder. I dropped my eyes and stared at the floor, gently nodding my head. After a few seconds, I glanced up one more time before opening the door. His eyes were still burning into me, like he was begging for me to argue back. To tell him why it could and should happen again. I couldn’t deny how disappointed I was that he couldn’t bring himself to say he felt the same way as me.
